Festive tips for an energy-efficient Christmas

With energy prices nearing an all-time high, it is important to consider how to be energy efficient over the Christmas season. Here are a collection of energy saving tips for around the home which could help ease the price burden.

Are you using LEDs?

LED lights which use nearly 90% less energy than incandescent lights. If you are still using old style lamps on your tree, it’s time to change them. Estimates show that 1/5 of all UK energy is on lighting.

Turn down your thermostat

When you are cooking or when you have guests staying, extra heat is being generated by both, so turn down your thermostat by a couple of degrees.

Switch to standby

Did you know that electrical items left on standby mode accounts for up to 10% of your electricity bill? If you aren’t using it or if you are going away – switch it off at the plug!

Keep warm for less

Move your furniture away from the radiators to let the hot air circulate better and close the curtains at night to keep the heat in.

Turn the lights off

It may sound obvious! But turn off the lights when not using the room.

Cook Smart

Food cooks faster when you keep the lids on the pots, hence less energy required. Also, cook several dishes in the oven simultaneously.

Check your heating system

Check your boiler to see if it requires maintenance to ensure every unit of energy used for heating is done so effectively. Or even opt for an upgrade to an Air Sourced Heat Pump.
