The Tamworth hotel was the flagship “Green Hotel” which is a cornerstone of Whitbread’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 26% by 2020. The aim was to cut carbon emissions by 80% during construction of the building and in the provision of heating, hot water and cooling of the hotel. Whitbread's pilot for the "Green Hotel" scheme and precursor to isoenergy's award winning installation. High efficiency thermal and acoustic insulation was installed to maximise thermal load and minimise thermal loss. The hotel's heat pump has consistently produced a coefficient of performance of over 6 - for every unit of electricity used to run it, 6 units of heat are delivered to the building. A staggering acheivement! Rainwater harvesting to provides 100% of the hotel’s toilet water use, saving 20% of the hotel’s entire water use. Low energy motion sensor LED lighting reduces carbon, bills and increases lighting longevity. The system prompted Whitbread to expand the “Green Hotel” project based on the success and efficiency of the Tamworth building.

Whitbread wanted isoenergy to set new standards for sustainable design and construction in the hotel sector.

Spatial heating, cooling and hot water for the hotel is provided by a 32 kW, three phase ground source heat pump. The collector loops were buried in boreholes under the car park.

Solar thermal panels provide hot water and, during the summer months, connected to heating and hot water via three 800 litre thermal stores.
