This Premier Inn site was built to a high sustainable specification - the heat pump system reduces emissions by 60% compared with the alternative of a boiler and air conditioning; it also saves a considerable amount of money on running costs. The project is the second of Whitbread’s “Green Hotels” scheme and builds on the success of the Tamworth Hotel, this time adding the company’s first low carbon restaurant into the mix. The buildings are highly insulated and constructed from sustainably sourced timber frames, feature low-flow shower heads, automated intelligent light sensors, rainwater harvesting for toilet water, sun pipes to increase natural light and heat recovery from the showers. This hotel in Burgess Hill was winner of "Installation of the Year" and the greenest hotel in Britain.

The heat pump system provides heating and cooling to the building. The fact that there is heating as well as cooling increases the efficiency of the system and reduces the net annual demand on the boreholes.

>The 60 kW ground source heat pump provides heating and cooling as well as hot water to the property. The collector array consists of 10 boreholes under the car park. The heat pump provides 1000 litres of hot water. A second air source heat pump provides additional hot water when needed.
