To date there has been a number of churches across Britain that have been taking advantage of the current subsidy scheme to install renewable heating systems.

These sorts of projects can make great financial sense as these buildings have often suffered from old and inefficient heating systems burning fossil fuels to keep warm. This leads to high running costs and a large carbon footprint for the church.

However, since the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme we have seen an increase in installations across ecclesiastical buildings. Due to the nature of the structures, they normally greatly benefit from a ‘low and slow’ heating approach. With ornate wooden sculptures and even murals that require conservation grade heating, these requirements are very well suited to ground source heat pump systems.

The benefits of installing a heat pump in a church include the ability to better maintain a steady temperature in the building fabric itself, which is usually of solid stone and timber construction. Once at temperature, the thermal mass of the structure will help even out the distribution of heat throughout the building, resulting in a warm and dry environment.

It is worth mentioning that these sorts of system are not just worthwhile for period churches. We have helped more modern churches reduce their carbon footprint too. Take a look at a selection of case studies showing renewable energy in churches:
