Central to the overall performance of any heating system will be the efficiency and reliability of the distribution pumps. In ground and air source heat pumps the presence of brine circuit distribution pumps means that there is even more necessity to ensure smooth operation at all times.

Having a noisy or vibrating pump is at best annoying, at worse will be affecting the performance of your system and potentially pointing to more severe issues.

For example, a brine distribution pump that begins to vibrate could be overworked, due to the breakdown of the glycol forming a more syrup-like fluid that becomes progressively harder to pump. The effect is higher electricity bills and a less efficient energy transfer. If spotted early enough, intervention can mean that the pump does not need replacement and the glycol can also be treated before a total refill of the collector array is needed.

Less severe issues such as displaced or hardened bearings can be resolved quickly and easily. Although we would always look to re-use pumps or parts of the pump where we can, e.g changing the head, we are also able to specify replacement pumps. This is not as straight forward as it sounds, as new generation pumps have features that are not always compatible with earlier models. Most new pumps are inverter driven, meaning that their energy output matches the demand from your distribution system. Installing these can help you save substantial cost in running your system. Therefore receiving impartial advice on which pump is best suited to your system can be invaluable.

We also come across sites where the size of the pumps that have been installed are not sufficient for the purpose for which they are used. Again, this can lead to lower efficiency in the system and long term reliability issues. If during a service visit we feel that your pumps are undersized, or indeed oversized and drawing too much energy, our engineers will explain their reasons to you and what they would consider to be a suitable replacement if you wished to improve your system efficiency.

If you have any concerns about the state of one or more of your pumps, then our friendly team would be happy to offer impartial advice.
