All ground and air source heat pump systems rely on intelligent control units to ensure that energy transfer between the collector, heat pump and building heating distribution system is carried out in the most efficient way.

The complexity of controllers varies, with the more advanced controllers, models able to simultaneously control the operation of several heating zones, the domestic hot water supply, multiple heat pumps and other additional inputs such as solar thermal or fossil fuel back-up systems. Many sites that we attend have good quality equipment installed but controller problems mean that the system is not operating at its best efficiency. Sometimes this is down to an electronic fault in the product, more commonly it is caused by the controller not being properly programmed in the first instance. It requires a full understanding of the system operation and complexity to make sure that settings are optimised for best performance, something that is not always fully understood by installers.

Most controllers have several layers of complexity. The top layer is for the user and allows for simple manipulation of the heat pump control – boosting the heating or hot water temporarily, adjusting the entire system by a degree or two, setting holiday modes and so on.  Beyond this is a layer of commands designed to be accessed by the installer only. Central to these commands are the heat curves, which determine the flow temperatures within the building dependent on what the external temperature is. These settings will be different in every property as they are affected by radiator surface area, number of radiators, under floor heating areas, standards of insulation as well as each individual’s preference for a comfortable heating regime.

It can take a period of weeks to monitor and adjust the heat curves properly, as it requires the system owner to understand how the internal temperature is affected in different weather conditions and how that affects their personal preference. A good installer will ensure that the system owner is happy prior to completing a project. Individual room thermostats are a common feature in many homes today. However, these can only decrease or increase the heating curve temperature to a minor extent. It is therefore vital for efficiency and controllability for the heat curves to be set correctly.
