As part of our new series of new articles we are asking industry professionals to provide comment on the various opportunities and obstacles facing the renewables industry today. For our first comment, the Heat Pump Federation’s Bean Beanland explains why it is important to start decarbonising at home.

Most of us now accept that the global climate is changing even though the evidence here in the UK appears to be more extremes of weather, rather than significant rises in sea levels threatening our homes. But what can we do at home, and why should we do it?

The UK was the first and, arguably, the greatest beneficiary of the industrial revolution and so led the way in the burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil and gas, including to heat our homes. Surely now it is our responsibility to lead again, especially in the run-up to the global climate conference, COP26, scheduled to be held in Glasgow in November.

According to annual government data, Energy Consumption in the UK, in 2019, 81.5% of our total household energy is used for heating and hot water; so for most of us, it’s with our heating and hot water that we can make the single biggest impact in reducing our carbon footprint at home.

We’ve also all seen how wind turbines and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are now generating over half of our electricity for the National Grid. This, and the almost total removal of coal-fired power stations, has reduced the carbon dioxide content of grid electricity to levels lower than any fossil fuel, including natural gas.

Put all this together and the clear low carbon choice for heating and hot water is electricity; more than this, using a heat pump to multiply the benefit will maximise the reductions immediately, will set up our homes for Net Zero 2050 when grid electricity is completely decarbonised and will reduce operational costs through time-of-use tariffs and as tax burdens move from electricity to gas and other fossil fuels.
