One of the most common questions we receive from people that are considering a ground source heat pump is whether you really save money by installing a ground source heat pump.

So, do you save money by installing a ground source heat pump?

Yes, a ground source heat pump will save you a significant amount every year if you are currently using heating oil, LPG or electricity to heat your home. If you are on the gas grid, the savings will be smaller as natural gas is comparatively cheap in the UK.  In any case, a well designed and installed heat pump system will save you money on your fuel bills as well as reduce your carbon footprint.

How much money will a ground source heat pump save me?

The amount you will save depends on the fuel you are replacing and the efficiency of the installed system. isoenergy will be able to tell you what you should expect to save following a free initial project consultation.

However, to achieve these savings it is vital that the ground source heat pump system is designed and installed correctly as poorly designed or installed systems could end up costing you a lot more to run than you were expecting. Heat pumps extract heat from the environment around us and, combined with a smaller amount of electricity, are capable of meeting all of a property’s spatial heating, hot water heating, pool water heating and summer cooling requirements. A well-designed system will efficiently extract energy from the surrounding environment whilst consuming as little electricity as possible. An efficient heat pump will not only have low running costs but it will also maximise the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) as payments are only made for the renewable element of the energy used, not the electrical element.

To ensure the ground source heat pump operates as efficiently as possible it has to be designed correctly. This design involves a careful assessment of the building's needs and a geology assessment analysing the thermal conductivity of the local ground conditions to establish exactly how much collector pipework will need to be installed in the garden or field. Once these two key bits of information are known, isoenergy can carefully select the appropriate heat pump and plant room equipment. At this point, isoenergy will be able to provide more accurate estimates on the level of efficiency you can expect from the system.

Following the design phase, isoenergy will then be able to complete the entire ground source heat pump installation using our in-house installation teams. This allows us to control the quality of the works that are important to system efficiency. The installation will consist of high-quality materials and copper fittings, phenolic foil-backed insulation will be used throughout with pump and pipe sizes carefully calculated to prevent pressure losses and inefficient operation.

Last but not least, isoenergy will train you on how to operate the heat pump efficiently and minimise the system’s running costs.
