Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
for heat generation
Under the terms of the RHI subsidy, for every kWh of renewable energy generated using a ground source heat pump or biomass boiler a payment is received. Typically, for sites currently burning oil or propane, the combination of reduced running costs and the RHI can mean a payback in three to seven years and return on investment of 20% per annum or better. This makes this year the time to finally move away from reliance on fossil fuel.
Feed in Tariff (FiT)
for electricity generation
Under the terms of the Feed in Tariff you get paid for every kWh of electricity generated. Should you have a suitable site, a micro-hydro system can generate enough electricity to power a house and heating system and show a return on investment of 15-20%. Similarly, installing a solar photovoltaic system could give you a return on investment of around 12% per annum.
