As part of our commitment to making battery storage work for our customers, we have just taken delivery of our first ‘Tesla Powerwall 2’ system for a client.

When installed, the system will consist of three battery units distributed across the three phases of the property’s electricity supply. The battery cells use a lithium-ion-based chemistry similar in principle to those used in mobile phones and the same as Tesla use in their car batteries. The batteries have a warranty for 10 years.

The battery system will allow the property owners to use more of their home-generated electricity. The batteries will be charged by a 45 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) array in a field next to the house, meaning that they will be able to use their home-generated electricity during the evening when the solar photovoltaic system is not generating. In the summer, on sunny days when the solar PV generates more power than is used by the house the batteries will store power for use overnight or the following day, when it may be cloudy.

As the house is heated by a ground source heat pump, there is a large demand for electricity, even at night. With their new electric car charger, the owners will also be able to use their solar power to charge their car when they get home in the evening. This way they will be driving using their own home-grown energy.
