Situated in a quiet rural area near Bath, the owners of Brook Cottage wanted to create a more sustainable household. With a new extension underway, relying on the old oil-fired boiler was going to significantly increase heating costs.

First, a detailed energy assessment of the property was carried out. After identifying the estimated heat load, isoenergy designed, supplied and installed a 22kw Ecoforest ground source heat pump system. The owners were able to install four 111m deep boreholes in the nearby land surrounding the property. These provided the energy from the earth which was then transported to the heat pump before being compressed and used to heat this property.

The owners also decided to use the power of the sun to help partially offset the increased electricity demand from the heat pump. Installing a ten-panel array that has the capacity of 2.52kWp. This will help to offset the daily electricity costs during periods of strong sunshine.

To ensure a sufficient supply of heating and hot water, a 300L buffer tank and a 300L hot water cylinder were installed. These act as storage for future use of the property and ensure enough heat for times of peak usage.

The home is now heated sustainably, resulting in savings on energy bills, but also drastically reduced carbon emissions by over 80%.

Key features:

  • 22kW Ecoforest ground source heat pump
  • Cordivari 300L buffer tank
  • Joule 300L hot water tank
  • Ten Monocrystalline Solar Panel array
