The owners of Lee Old Hall, a Grade II* house dating back to the 16th century, wanted to bring their historic building into the 21st century with the introduction of a ground source heat pump to provide heating and hot water.

Isoenergy was asked to consult on the various options available to them with a strict brief that comfort levels must be achieved even though the building would be described as 'difficult to heat' at best. Using the expertise we have gathered from over fourteen years of working in similar buildings, isoenergy recommended a 40kW Nibe ground source heat pump with 800L hot water cylinder and 500L buffer tank. The system provides all of the heating and hot water to the house as well as a flat and tack room set within the outbuildings.

The energy for all this heat and hot water came from 2,100m of collector pipework buried in seven 150m long trenches. The site had a limited electrical supply so isoenergy consulted with the District Network Operator (DNO) on the client's behalf to increase the incoming electrical supply to three-phase. This ensured an appropriately sized heat pump could be installed as well as future-proofing the site to ensure car charging points could be installed at a later date alongside other electrical items within the property.

Lee Old Hall is proof that, with careful consultation and considered design, old buildings can be heated with heat pump systems. If you have a building considered hard to heat, please get in touch with our consultant engineers on 01293 821 345 to discuss how we can help.
