Works are well and truly underway at Wimpole Hall with the groundworks progressing well as we make the most of the good weather.

Twenty of the thirty boreholes have now been drilled in the car park with the final section of 10 boreholes due to start next week. The most complex part of the flow and return trenching, from the plant room in the Mansion to the plant room in the Old Rectory Restaurant has been completed. This involved a complex dig around the Mansion where known and unknown services were encountered and dealt with. The National Trust site staff arranged for the lifting, numbering and relaying of all of the historic cobbles, a feat in itself, and the National Trust volunteer archaeologists have been on site everyday monitoring progress and cataloguing finds and ground conditions.

The next part of the trenching works involves a 30m section of hand digging due to arboriculture restrictions (trees in the way) before we enter the orchard, where it is expected we will encounter some archaeological finds. As such, the county archaeologist is on standby to come and inspect our works as we progress through the orchard.

More updates will follow in due course as the project continues.
