The heating system for this new-build house, the 1st UK commission for world renowned architect Richard Meier, was completed by isoenergy in collaboration with Sizebreed Construction (main contractor) and CBG Consultants (M&E Consultants). The mixture of technologies installed mean that the heating and hot water can be provided in the most efficient way possible at any one time. For example, the solar thermal performs best during the summer, when the pool is most in use. It is estimated that the heat pump alone will have reduced the sites potential carbon footprint against oil or LPG between 40% - 50% and reduced its potential running costs by 50% at today’s prices. If you factor in the solar thermal contribution these figures are higher still. Interestingly, the house was featured on Grand Designs' House of the Year 2017.

Given the rural location of the property there was no option of a mains gas connection, leaving the option of Oil/LPG or renewables. Given the high specification of the building and the clients' wish to use renewable energy to limit the house’s impact on the environment, alongside reducing running costs as much as possible, it was decided that a GSHP should be the lead form of energy for the house. Additionally, the solar thermal system took advantage of the available solar energy, particularly in the summer.

A Viessmann 42kW ground source heat pump is connected to the underfloor heating system and hot water circuit. 3,200 metres of pipe buried in the grounds collect energy for the heat pumnp.

The 20 kW of solar thermal allows the heating to be provided by free energy from the sun. The intelligent controls mean that the solar thermal takes the lead on the heating, hot water and the pool when there is solar energy available; the heat pump is only activated when there is insufficient solar input.
