Surrey Is Letting The Sun & Earth Turn It Greener
Rising oil prices, a wish to reduce running costs and wishing to do their bit for the environment have inspired a number of households to turn away from fossil fuels and install green alternatives to heat their homes this winter and provide hot water. No longer do they need to rely on the oil companies for irregular deliveries and then be shocked by the bill. Added to this they are making it a cleaner environment to live in and adding value to their homes.
One example of a family who have benefitted are soon to be featured in the Grand Designs Magazine. Their Huf house (pictured above left) was bought at the grand designs exhibition in June and by the end of July a ground source heat pump was drying the house out for final decoration. All the hot water and the heat for this house will be supplied by a ground source heat pump where a series of pipes are laid under the lawn to harness the earth's natural thermal heat. This can work in reverse during the hot summer months and so cool the building.
In another example, the owners of the с15th farm house (pictured bottom left) opted for an (air source) Air Water Heat Pump integrated into their existing oil fired central heating system to provide 100% of their heating and hot water thus dramatically reducing their reliance on oil and cutting their heating costs by about 60%. They have in addition insulated their loft space to keep the heat in in the winter months and to keep the heat out in the summer months. One family has decided to let their lake keep them warm. By sinking the pipes which connect to the ground source heat pump into their lake, they can harness solar energy to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
Even businesses are benefiting. Fit health studio are making sure that their clients will not be working out in the cold this winter by installing an air source heat pump to work in conjunction with the existing radiators. Not only are they keeping their costs down by using renewable energy they are also ensuring that the heat in the studio is at a constant comfortable level for their clients.
